D: PILGRIMAGE – WALK THE GUDBRANDSDALEN PATH

This is a suggestion for a 7-day trip to Norway walking the pilgrimage route in Gudbrandsdal valley. It is the longest pilgrim route in Norway, and was the main road to Nidaros, todays Trondheim, during the Middle Ages. This seven-day pilgrimage goes through the Gudbrandsdal valley and offers a vast variety of experiences. The path has countless cultural heritages to offer and reminds you of the way of life in the past. Here you will find tombstones, historical places and medieval buildings. During these days you will experience grand and picturesque views of Norwegian landscapes.

ALTERNATIVE 1:
THE GUDBRANDSDALEN PATH WITH HOTEL STANDARD

Day 1 Oslo – Lillehammer
You arrive at Oslo Airport Gardermoen. Take the train north, from Oslo Airport to Lillehammer (the train departs every hour). You stay at Stasjonen Lillehammer. stasjonen.no. Visit the olympic city from 1994.

Day 2 Lillehammer – Øyer
The pilgrimage starts. Today’s distance is 18 km. You walk from Lillehammer to Øyer. Accommodation at Nermo hotel.

Day 3 Øyer – Tretten
The path goes up in the valley throughout the day and cross pastures, over several fences and goes on narrow paths. You walk from Øyer to Tretten, 20 km. Accommodation at Glomstad Guesthouse,


Day 4 Tretten – Ringebu
Walk from Tretten to Ringebu – 25 km. You pass the Ringebu Stave church during the day. The church is open all day, 9 – 17.00 during summer. Accommodation at Johnsgård B&B. And you can have dinner in Annis Resturant in Ringebu town center.

 

Day 5 Ringebu – Hundorp
Walk from Ringebu to Hundorp. Here you visit the pilgrim centre Dale-Gudbrand and Dale-Gudbrands Gard. The farm was an old chief seat and centre of power for the Gudbrandsdal valley during the Viking era (approx. 790 to 1100 AD). This is a 12 km long walk. Dinner will be at Dale-Gudbrands Gard. (Alternatively, you can continue to Sygard Grytting (another 7 kms).

 Day 6 Hundorp – Kvam

Walk from Hundorp to Kvam – 24 km. Visit the church and war memorial. Church open 10 -14 in July and the chapel open all day all year. War memorial open Tuesday–Sundays 12–17, www.krigsminne.no and accommodation at Sinclair in Kvam  www.vertshuset-sinclair.no.

Day 7 Kvam – Otta
Walk from Kvam to Otta – 25 km. This is the final day of the walk. You arrive the town Otta in the afternoon. From here you take the train back to Oslo Airport in the evening.

Estimated Price 1150 EUR (2021). This estimated price includes
luggage transport, accommodation and meals. Transfer, guide and driver not included.

Add on: If you like you can take the train north to Trondheim and end your pilgrimage walk in the Nidaros Cathedral. (you will need to add 1 – 2 days for this, not included in the price).

ALTERNATIVE 2:
THE GUDBRANDSDALEN PATH ON LOW BUDGET
For meals call in advance – sleeping bag is necessary.

Day 1. You arrive at Oslo Airport Gardermoen. Take the train north, from Oslo Airport to Lillehammer (the train depart every hour). You can stay at Stasjonen Lillehammer for the night stasjonen.no. Experience the Olympic city, Lillehammer, with its activities and attractions. 

Day 2. Walk from Lillehammer to Øyer, 23 km, accommodation at Skøien B & B.

Day 3. Walk from Øyer to Fåvang – 29 km. Here you stay at Nordrum gård www.nordrumgard.no.

Day 4. Walk from Fåvang to Hundorp – 22 km. Visit the Ringebu stave church on your way. The church is open all day 9 – 17. Accommodation at pilgrim center Dale-Gudbrand (see contact below).

Day 5. Walk from Hundorp to Kvam – 24 km. Accommodation at Kirketeigen Camping www.kirketeigen.no. Visit the church/ the chapel open all day all year.

Day 6. Walk from Kvam to Sjoa – 15 km. Accommodation at Sjoa raftingsenter, it’s possible to add an extra day here to do white water rafting (activity not included in price). www.sjoaraftingsenter.no.

Day 7. Walk from Sjoa to Otta – 9 km. This is the final day of the walk. You arrive the town Otta in the afternoon. From Otta you take the train back to Oslo Airport.

Estimated price 700 EUR (2021). This price includes accommodation.
Transfer, guide and driver not included.
